Monte Palace Tropical Garden occupies seven hectares of terraced slopes 550 metres above Funchal, a site that began as a private quinta in the late 18th century and transformed into a botanical showcase in 1987 when entrepreneur José Berardo acquired the estate.
The original Monte Palace Hotel, an ornate Belle Époque structure built in 1897 by consul Alfredo Guilherme Rodrigues, stood here until its closure in 1943; fragments of its azulejo-clad façades now form part of the museum complex at the garden's entrance.
